Still on like raw donkey kong

I have to say, this last 2 weeks has definitely brought me to feeling better than I have felt and looked in many years! Mostly juicing, salad with low fat raw dressing, & fruit (not too much)..nuts and seeds to a minimum. The detox is slow and steady, as is the weight loss. But my energy levels are through the roof! I'm super stoked, super grateful! I plan on continuing along until I feel I need to do otherwise. It's summer so the lightness is a welcome feeling.
Ginger and Lemon really hit the spot right now. A typical am juice consists of 1-2 lemons, a decent size (like 2" or more) of ginger, an apple, a cuke or part of, some celery, a few leaves of green (collard, kale, etc), and a few carrots. Some days I am adding a piece of beet, beet greens, or dandelion to make my liver smile.
To Mamey or not to Mamey, that is an easy question to answer..If you haven't been acquainted, Mamey Sapote is nothing short of a dessert. Creamy, sweet, rich..kind of like if a sweet potato could be a fruit with a cherry and vanilla finish. I simply take a ripe fruit and process until smooth with a bit of lemon, and layer it with other tropical fruits like banana slices, diced ripe mango, some berries, and a nut crumble that is as easy as pulsing 4-6 soft pitted dates in a food processor, adding a cup of walnuts, 1/2 cup shredded coconut and pulsing again until fairly small but coarse. It will stick together if you pinch or press it, other wise its a great crumble. A pinch of salt is totally optional. Layers of said crumble in your Mamey Parfait will not go unnoticed..Delicious! Pic to follow, soon!
P.S. Mamey season is almost over, so don't delay. I have seen them at Publix where I live, and other sources include awesome ethnic fruit/veggie markets.

Home

Wow, I can't believe how timeless life really is, and how something like eating a raw food diet can instantly make me feel so much better, providing the comfort we often describe we attain when we are "home"..
After a long hiatus, which you can read about in the previous post, I'm happy to share, I've been exclusively juicing and eating live foods for about a week. I'm elated! I'm thankful to be sharing the journey, with beautiful friends and family, making an even more profound and heartfelt impact on my
Health and Well Being!
Wishing everything in the universe the highest respect and honorπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œ

Spring Cleaning/Reality check

As I peer out my front door, I am captivated by the fact that the land I live on has been blossoming in response to the rain, and holds many treasures my eyes are open to beholding. Compost volunteer Watermelon plants are bearing fruit, I harvested a pineapple yesterday, I planted some native plants, as I continue to work towards a grass-less yard, and I was completely in awe as I heard the buzz from the blooming cabbage palms the other day and viewed every kind of stinging insect foraging on the immense fronds of flowers.

Spring cleaning is kind of automatic, almost like our autonomic breathing..I am super busy, and fairly tired, but I can't escape pacing myself and fitting in some shifting, moving, getting rid of, letting more in, and cleaning the crap out of my space. It also feels like a recharge in alot of ways as well though, like doing new things..hoola hooping for example, i'm on it, just waiting on the hoop itself, then I plan on getting in touch with a muscle group I think I forgot about..

New music, I attended Bonnaroo a few weeks ago, and got a major recharge on live music, music festivals, camping with 90,000 people with porta potty's, and new music I am happy to be acquainted with. Gogol Bordello was amazing, and that whole stage that day was worth checking out..Omar Souleyman had everyone out in front of that stage moving their body, you just couldn't help it. I hadn't seen Primus since like 1992 at a Lollapalooza, and it felt great! I'm looking forward to the new album, and it's a pleasure to go see a band live and have them share music of theirs that is familiar, fun no matter how many times you hear or see it...I'm stoked they played when they did on the stage they were on because for the rest of the weekend, that stage had awful sound, and was dry, dusty, and garbage laden..Over on the grassy knoll, I thoroughly enjoyed, My Morning Jacket, The Decemberists, and heard but too packed to really see Arcade Fire, and Widespread Panic.

Reality check..well I haven't been exclusively consuming Raw foods for a few years now. I set up Eating alive to share information relating to raw foods and a healthy lifestyle. After being a vegetarian for 20+ years, I decided to try consuming meat again. First let me tell you how opposed I am to factory farming, and monoagriculture..I strive to stand for the same values I uphold wether I eat meat or not, which is to be respectful, and consume meat that was harvested from animals not mistreated in any way. Am I ok with killing an animal to eat it? Not entirely..still on the fence. I can't say I'd go out in the back yard and be able to kill and prep one of my chickens, so hmm, not sure how long this will last. SO, I'm tweaking the blog a bit, and will use it more for my babble, as is contained here..

Latest news and happenings: We got a pair of baby girl goats..May(hem) and Lily, so stinking cute. I hope I'm better at milking them then I was myself..I just put new strings on my acoustic bass..(part of the recharge, now to create time to play). We harvested 220 pounds of honey in May, the bees are doing great.

Seasnax

Time transpires, yes..but I get inspired and have to share the good news!
It's extremely rare for me to get super excited about a new product in the Natural food industry..so many reasons, but you know the basics, it's akin to going out to eat..quality, value, nutrition, packaging..corporate or individual, ecological? (So many more, so little time)

SO...this year I have had the pleasure of reacquainting with a sea vegetable that I so adore..NORI. I have been touting the benefits of sea vegetables to consumers for as long as I can remember. And as I entered motherhood, found myself searching for the ultimate in nutritious plant based protein packed full of vitamins and minerals. Of course, sea vegetables fit the profile.

Every year, I have the pleasure of attending a Natural Products Association vendor show at a convention center somewhere in Orlando. They are an amazing place to learn about new products in the Natural Food industry and this organization is keen on supporting individually owned awesome companies. This past year, Peggy found "SeaSnax". A toasted Nori sheet, in handy small size packs, or large sheets..(i'm hoping for a BULK pack soon..ha ha) They come in flavors, such as Toasted Onion, Spicy Chipotle, and Classic Olive. WE LOVE THEM! Not just myself, and let me tell you what a pleasure it is to be able to put a pack of these in my son's lunch, and be fully aware he will inhale them before even touching his other food..But everyone that try's them, loves them. We all crunch on them at work, (it's a delicate crunch, they almost melt in your mouth).. Delicious, nutritious..Kudos to SeaSnax, my favorite product of 2011!

Raw Sharing

It's been on my mind all week to send supportive energy to anyone eating Raw foods and wanting to eat them exclusively, and finds it challenging, falls off the wagon, and has a hard time getting back on.
So many of us have been eating a certain way for most of our lives, and are surrounded by others not only in our immediate space but especially when we are away from home, at work, or travelling, eating foods we are accustomed to (for some addicted). It can be a bit of a deterrant to constantly have to explain your menu to everyone, or be the "odd ball" in a group. I also believe it takes time, not only to learn about Raw foods, but to retrain your physical, and mental responses to foods, so be kind to yourself, and give it some time.
I hope you can find some comfort in your journey, knowing that by just learning about, and adding Raw foods to your diet, even if not 100%, you are giving yourself, and sharing with others, nourishment for your body, mind, and soul, and contributing positively to the mother of all, the planet we live on, who desperately needs us to respond if we are to continue on as a species. I don't think she can take much more of this dis-ease we are constantly communing with.
So, keep at it. Don't put yourself through undue stress, especially with the holiday season coming up. Find ways to prepare easier recipes, and SHARE with others that are eating Raw foods. Get a group together around the holiday, and make a large batch of one dish to share and ask them to do the same, and before you know it, you have a meal with several components to delight over, instead of a bowl of mash on a plate of greens.
As always, do this with kindness towards yourself, and wish that very same back to others, and I feel you will find the weight lifted off somewhat, and will enjoy eating Raw much more.
I am open if anyone in the area wants to get together on a share/swap....and hope to plan a potluck for November here @ my house...If anyone hears of any other Raw happenings they want me to post and share, pls. let me know! Rawjen

More from Thursday's class

Ok, here is the "Really, One bowl Brownie" recipe. I highly recommend getting a copy of this book if you haven't already. It is perfect for an entry level book, and just as perfect for those with experience preparing Raw foods. I am always happy to promote a resource out to someone who asks, and that is probably the most frequently asked question-(where do I start/what book should I get first). But to elaborate on dialogue I feel important to share, and this can filter in at any time during your journey with raw foods, I see alot of us getting away from cooked, processed, and refined foods, and when switching over to more raw foods in the diet, leaning on the sweets. I feel this is a great way to get acquainted, and feel "mentally" satisfied with raw foods as you may associate with almost a "replacement" for certain foods for some time. Eventually this fades, and the simplicity of eating even "mono" or just singular foods can come to the forefront of your eating habits, I highly enjoy when I am tuned it to this way, it is simple and takes alot of the work out of eating that makes our daily routines so difficult.
Enough blabbing, here's the recipe! lol pg83 "Raw for Dessert" Jennifer Cornbleet

3 cupswalnuts (pulse in food processor until coarse and remove and reserve 1/2 cup)
1/8 tsp salt (add salt and process with remaining walnuts until resembles crumbs)
16 pitted medjool dates (add dates and process until mixture starts to stick together)
2/3 cup cocoa powder (add cocoa powder and mix until incorporated)
1/2 cup dried cherries
1/2 cup reserved chopped walnuts
2 tsps water (add walnuts, dried cherries, and water and process briefly just until mixed)
optional 1/4 cup cocoa nibs

Prepare the ganache (you won't be sorry)pg 26
3/4 cup agave nectar
3/4 cup cocoa powder
1/3 cup coconut oil
1/8 tsp plus a pinch of salt (i omitted when I prepared, and was fine)
Process until smooth, scraping down the sides of the workbowl if necessary. You may need to place in a bowl of warm water to soften to spread if it is too firm, and remeber to start with soft room temp coconut oil, or it will be hard to get incorporated. ENJOY

THX Lisa for the great feedback, I love to share all this goodness, just like you! I can't wait to hear about you class next Saturday! (I also can't stop thinking about yummy kale chips!) You should get them prepared to sell, I will help you promote them! :)

Raw for Dessert

Thanks everyone for a wonderful and yummy class. The recipe's from last night's class @ Nutrition Smart were from Jennifer Cornbleet's "Raw for Dessert" book. I prepared the Banana Caramel Crumble pg.47 which was comprised of the Shortbread Crust pg. 32
1 cup unsweetened shredded dried coconut, 1 cup walnuts, 1/4 tsp salt (pulse together in a food processor until crumb texture) then add 6 medjool dates and process until mixture starts to stick together. Press into small ramekins, or a larger vessel, reserving some for the top.
4-5 bananas sliced. Lay onto crumble, and press down to smash. Cover w/remaining crumble.
And top with Caramel Sauce pg. 25
1/2 cup raw cashew butter (I used almond last night) 1/2 cup raw agave or maple syrup (I used a combination of both, but heavier on the agave) 1/2 cup date paste (6-7 dates soaked 15-30 minutes in 3/4 cup of water and processed to a smooth paste) Blend all until smooth and pour over banana crumb mixture....YUMMY.
I will post the "really, one bowl brownie and chocolate ganache" recipe and add jen-ish dialogue later on today or tomorrow at latest...peace out!
